 Introduction of the Bill

The Social Security Fairness Act was introduced to repeal two provisions: the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions reduce Social Security benefits for public sector workers like teachers, firefighters, and police officers.

 House Approval

In November 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill with a strong bipartisan vote of 327-75. This marked a significant step forward for the legislation.

 Senate Approval

The Senate approved the bill on December 21, 2024, with a vote of 76-20. This approval came just before the end of the current Congress.

 Presidential Signature

The bill now awaits the signature of President Joe Biden. Once signed, it will become law and take effect for Social Security payments starting from December 2023.

Impact

The repeal of WEP and GPO will restore full Social Security benefits to nearly 3 million public sector workers. This change is expected to increase federal deficits by $195 billion over the next decade.
